Let’s get to the bottom of whether CapCut could also be getting banned alongside TikTok
It’s all a bit confusing
At this rate, I genuinely don’t know whether TikTok is actually going to get banned or not, but unfortunately, beloved editing took CapCut could also be taken casualty and become unavailable for those in the US.
So, let’s get to the bottom of whether CapCut is also going to get banned and why exactly it could be affected by the new laws.
CapCut is owned by ByteDance which is also the parent company that owns TikTok. Following The Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, which was signed in April 2024, all of ByteDance’s apps would get banned regardless of their content.
This means that not only could CapCut be affected by the 2014 act but ByteDance’s other apps such as Lemon8 and Hypic could also get banned.
However, unlike the TikTok ban, which would result in the app immediately disappearing from your phone if you’re based in the US, things would work a little differently with CapCut.
Instead, it will no longer be available for users to download from the app store and will no longer receive any updates. Ultimately this will most likely lead to the app either being shut down or becoming unusable due to an outdated system and increasing system bugs.
Like TikTok, the app could be saved from a slow decline if it was sold to a company in America, or if Trump decided to intervene and prevent the act from being carried out.
But given that we’re mere days away from the ban and there’s been no word on ByteDance’s apps being saved it’s most likely that it’s the end of the line for CapCut. I’ve genuinely never been more grateful to live in the UK.
