This damning The Traitors theory explains how the show’s format is actually deeply flawed
‘The early weeks of it are meaningless – if you get a Traitor out week one, you might as well not’
Look, I love The Traitors. We all love The Traitors! But regarding this show that we literally wait all year begging to come back, something this year for The Traitors 2025 is feeling a bit off. I think it’s the first season of The Traitors where the cracks in the formula are beginning to show – even if the episode on Friday was the finest of season three so far and definitely a return to form. I’ve been wracking my brains about what it is that feels like it’s not quite there. And now I’ve got the answer, thanks to this very damning theory about why The Traitors format is actually very flawed. A theory from Richard Osman, of all people.
Speaking on his The Rest is Entertainment podcast with his co-host Marina Hyde, Richard Osman says “It’s this huge hit, but the format doesn’t really work. Because there is absolutely no reason why you would vote off the stupid people. So, season after season after season – Australia season two is the worst example of this – you end up with no insight at all. Often people with no insight are the people with not the greatest personalities either.

“So, that happens time after time again. That’s a big flaw. Another big flaw is this: Three Traitors, then what if they get voted out immediately? Well if they get voted out, you just put new Traitors in. So actually the early weeks of it are meaningless. Because they’re just going to get replaced. If you get a Traitor out on week one, you might as well not. Because they’re immediately going to get replaced. You might as well for the first few weeks just get rid of people who annoy you.”
It’s very fair theory on how flawed the format of The Traitors is, especially as we learn the machinations more and more. Marina explains further about another flaw being how much power Faithfuls who build alliances and then decline to be a Traitor when asked to be recruited have. Much to think about, and it’s so true that the Traitors are in a more powerful position really because they can always recruit when any get banished pretty much right up to the end.
