Former first minister Nicola Sturgeon announces separation from husband
The separation comes after a turbulent year for the couple, including Peter Murrel’s arrest
Former First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, has announced that she and her long term partner Peter Murrell have decided to end their Marriage.
The announcement was made toay via an Instagram Story from her official account.
The statement read as follows: “With a heavy heart I am confirming that Peter and I have decided to end our marriage.
“To all intents and purposes we have been separated for some time now and feel it is time to bring others up to speed with where we are. It goes without saying that we still care deeply for each other, and always will. We will be making no further comment.”
The Guardian reported that the split was not unexpected with it being understood that sturgeon moved out of the marital home in Baillieston, Glasgow after Murrell was arrested and charged last year over the alleged embezzlement of donations to the SNP.
The couple were a formidable duo in Scottish politics with Sturgeon as leader of the SNP and First minister 2014 to 2023 whilst Murrell was party chief executive.
After starting a relationship in 2003 the pair married in 2010, during which Sturgeon was deputy leader of the SNP under Alex Salmond.
Ms Sturgeon unexpectedly resigned as SNP leader and First Minister in February 2023.
Most of the former First Minister’s recent public appearances have been a series of in-conversation events with crime novelist Val McDermid in which the pair discuss their love of books with literary guests. This is ahead of the release of her Memoir which is due to come out this year
In April 2024 he was rearrested and charged in connection with the embezzlement of party funds.
