The UK investigation into Liam Payne’s death has begun. The One Direction singer tragically died in October after falling from a balcony of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires. Liam Payne’s cause of death has been confirmed
A UK inquest into Liam Payne’s death has started. Dr Roberto Victor Cohen said at a hearing at Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court that the cause of Liam Payne’s death was “polytrauma”. The court was told it might take the UK authorities “some time” to establish exactly what happened to Liam Payne in the hours before his death.
What is ‘polytrauma’?
Polytrauma literally means “many wounds”. When it’s listed as a cause of death, it means someone was injured in multiple places on their body.
This fits what the coroners in Buenos Aires said about Liam Payne’s death. The National Prosecutor’s Office for Criminal and Correctional Matters in Argentina released a report, which said, “The morticians… concluded that Payne’s death was caused by ‘polytraumatisms’ and ‘internal and external haemorrhage’, as a result of the fall the musician suffered from the balcony of the third-floor room of the hotel in the Palermo neighbourhood where he was staying.”

In Argentina, five people have been charged in connection to Liam Payne’s death. In the UK, another investigation is happening. The coroner Crispin Butler spoke at the hearing at the Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court. He said: “Whilst there are ongoing investigations in Argentina into the circumstances of Liam’s death, over which I have no legal jurisdiction, it is anticipated that procuring the relevant information to address particularly how Liam came by his death may take some time through the formal channel of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.”
