Hold on, is the Hollywood sign actually on fire in L.A. right now?

Many viral videos have been circulating

California is currently in a terrifying state as wildfires continue to rage on and burn down buildings in its path. The devastating effects have left tens of thousands of people without homes, including some famous names who live near the L.A. Palisades.

The three main wildfires, in Palisades, Hurst and Eaton began on Tuesday but another small fire erupted in the Hollywood Hills on Wednesday. It started at around 6pm local time but has been quickly moving since then. It’s engulfed more than 40 acres of land so far.

Is the Hollywood Sign in danger of being burned down by wildfires?

The Hollywood Sign is placed on Mount Lee, which is thankfully not in any immediate danger from the wildfires as of Thursday morning. The Hollywood Sign was not in evacuation order or evacuation warning areas, so for the time being, it isn’t burning.

Many videos have been shared on TikTok of the Hollywood sign seemingly on fire, but thanks to the information from the police and fire department in the area, we know they aren’t real. The Hollywood sign is currently safe, but there are other landmarks which are currently at risk of being destroyed by the wildfires.

Which other L.A. landmarks were affected?

The observatory, an Art Deco masterpiece built during the Great Depression and brought to fame in the 1955 James Dean film Rebel Without a Cause, was closed on Wednesday according to the information on its website.

The Los Angeles Zoo, also in the mountainous area of Griffith Park, closed Wednesday. The website confirmed the closure after reports of high winds. The zoo said it hoped to reopen to the public on Thursday but it would “continue to assess the situation” before making a decision.

Universal Studios Hollywood and the adjoining Universal CityWalk were also closed on Wednesday due to high winds and fire conditions, although they are currently not near the affected areas. The sites both “continue to assess the situation,” but also hope to reopen on Thursday.
