The Matilda Djerf scandal explained: Employees accuse her of bullying and fat-shaming

She allegedly forced one Djerf Avenue worker to scrub her toilet

Matilda Djerf is being cancelled once again, and this time it’s over the way she allegedly treats her employees.

The Swedish influencer, who owns the huge fashion brand Djerf Avenue, had a scandal last year after small TikTok accounts claimed they were getting copyright strikes for posting more affordable versions of her clothes.

Now, some past and present employees have come out and accused the 27-year-old of creating a toxic work environment.

Here’s a full rundown of the drama.

Here’s what’s going on with Matilda Djerf

11 former and current Djerf Avenue employees have claimed that they were treated badly while working for Matila Djerf’s company. They shared the allegations in a report by the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, which includes videos of them speaking about their experience.

The allegations include mistreatment, bullying, creating a toxic work environment, favouritism, and fat-shaming. Employees have accused Matilda of swearing at them, being condescending, and creating a horrible work environment that leaves them in tears and causes panic attacks.

“I have never been so afraid of a person in my entire life,” one worker said.

Another added: “Every day is psychological terror in that office. It’s the absolute worst workplace I’ve ever been at.”

“I was scared every day that I would get a scolding,” someone else claimed.

Another employee said the influencer saw images of a plus-size model and said she didn’t want to use them because the woman looked “so fat”.

So, what’s this toilet scandal?

One particular allegation has gone viral after an employee claimed the influencer has a toilet that only she and her “favorite” employees are allowed to use.

The worker, who said “She [Matilda] doesn’t even see us as equals,” claimed there was a sign on the door that said: “Please do not use!”

When the sign fell down one day, the employee was allegedly forced to scrub the entire bathroom as it had been used by someone else.

The influencer has responded to the claims

Matilda Djerf and a spokesperson for Djerf Avenue, Pernilla Bonny, both responded to the allegations in a statement to Aftonbladet.

“I take the criticism that has come forward very seriously and want to be clear that a safe and respectful work environment is crucial for me, both as a person and as the founder of Djerf Avenue,” Matilda said.

“If any staff member has felt mistreated or ill-equipped in their role due to my actions, that is something I am truly sorry for and apologize for. It was never my intention to contribute to a work environment that negatively affects anyone and I am sorry that there are employees who have had such experiences.”

When asked if it was reasonable to force an employee scrub to scrub the toilet, Pernilla said “obviously” not. She did defend Matilda’s right to have her own private toilet in order to “stay healthy,” but said the use of the influencer’s bathroom by her “favorite” workers would end.

“If there are employees who feel that we do not live up to our values, it is obviously something we have to work even harder on,” the spokesperson added.
