University of Birmingham students have so far raised over £55,000 for Movember 2024
They’re also seventh on the Movember UK university leaderboard
The University of Birmingham have so far raised over £55,000 for Movember 2024, and there’s still almost a week to go.
Every November, university societies across the country come together to raise money for the Movember Foundation. The charity aims to raise awareness for men’s health, both physical and mental, particularly prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health issues. They encourage young men to share their experiences and advocate for the early diagnosis of health issues.
Since 2003, the Movember Foundation has funded more than 1,320 men’s health projects across the globe, changing the way men are treated and supported for the better.
Every year, the University of Birmingham takes part in this challenge, with all sorts of societies raising money for Movember. One of the most popular ways to fundraise for the charity is by growing out a moustache for the month, which is why there’s been a lot more facial hair on campus recently!
Last year, the University of Birmingham raised a whopping £53,755, and this year, the team is aiming to hit £60,000.
Now, at the end of Week Four, over £55,000 has already been raised, with Engineering Rugby currently leading the way on campus.
There’s also a leaderboard that shows the universities raising the most for Movember and so far UoB is in seventh place.
The Birmingham Tab spoke to Callum, who’s a Movember ambassador at the University of Birmingham. He said: “I wanted to encourage people that talking is okay and, in some cases, vital. Having had personal struggles myself and seen my peers struggle, I wanted to try and make a difference by tackling the stigma around mental health.

“I have loved every aspect of the role so far, from running the social media channels to giving society talks explaining the cause and, of course, organising events that have been instrumental to our fundraising efforts as a university.
“In terms of the best taches, well, I am a member of the rugby club [UOBRFC], and I have to say the boys have sprouted some terrific taches!”
The leaderboards don’t close until 9th December, there is still plenty of time to get involved.
By joining the UoB challenge on the Movember website, everyone is able to fundraise, and share their link to friends and family to donate too!
