Birmingham’s iconic German Market is back, but this time there’s a ‘one drink only’ rule

A beer and a hotdog will also set you back £21

The infamous Birmingham German Market is back, popular with locals and students alike, this Brummie staple floods the streets with music, lights, and festive folk.

The market is known for bringing Christmas spirit into the city, but the new one drink rule has left many feeling flat.

The new rule says that market-goers can only buy one drink at a time for the bar, meaning you won’t be able to get one for you and a mate.

This has annoyed revellers as queues to the bars are often long, and people are concerned about the length of time they’ll spend in them.

Some have even said they’ll boycott this year’s market and head to Germany or Austria instead.

However, this isn’t the only thing about the German Market that has irked visitors.

It’ll now be £21 if you wish to buy a frankfurter hotdog and a beer but it must be said that the hotdog is half a metre long, so you’re getting a lot of meat for your money.

Office worker, John Beard, from Perry Barr said he’ll be boycotting the event: “This will be the first time in ten years I’m not going to bother.

“It’s a combination of the rip-off prices and that one beer rule is just daft. You can queue for half hour there easily so sometimes you want to double up.

“It’s a measure to stop people getting drunk, but where’s the fun in that at Christmas? If people want to get merry, let them. There’s never any trouble up there.

He added that the prices are too high considering people are concerned about their spending at the minute, saying: “For what it costs, it’s really not worth it because it’s absolutely rammed and you’re just standing about it the cold essentially. The stalls are the same each year too.

“People are watching the pennies more than ever and don’t want to spend nearly a tenner on a sausage. You can blow about £50 in ten minutes.”

Others took to social media to complain about the market.

Trevor Smith said: “The last time I went there I got a hot dog and coffee, cost me 15 quid, I said to the bloke ‘What part of Germany you from?’ he said Tipton.”

Another commented: “I’ve visited a couple of times years ago and I didn’t think much of it, prices were high then.”

However, it’s not all doom and gloom as a number of people were singing the praises of 2023’s best UK Christmas market.

“I think it’s amazing, it’s the best time of the year and it’s really entertaining. It’s once a year and I come every year. I love it, I do.

“Everybody is really happy, it’s a great atmosphere,” Tony Jones, of Birmingham, said

And he isn’t the only one who loves the market, as his girlfriend Chloe Flynn added: “It is expensive for the beers, but because it’s German beer [so] you don’t even need that many to get drunk.”
