Love Island’s Dr Alex George made an honorary fellow of Cardiff University

‘Thank you so much for this award. I wish I was attending a different graduation day too’

Love Island alumni, Dr Alex George, has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship of Cardiff University.

Dr Alex received the recognition for his work in raising awareness for mental health.

The 34-year-old former A&E doctor is the UK Youth Mental Health Ambassador, a presenter, bestselling author, and cofounder of Mettle, a mental fitness app for men.

Dr Alex George aims to provide support for mental health, alongside making access to care and help easier and more readily available.

During the pandemic, the mental health advocate served as a reassuring and constant voice, offering guidance to those struggling during the uncertain time.

Dr Alex’s bibliography includes four Sunday Times best-selling books: Live Well Every Day in 2021, Better Day in 2022, The Mind Manual in 2023, and The Mind Manual in 2025. The author additionally appeared on Men’s Health UK’s YouTube channel to discuss the topics which are most important to him.

Working closely with The Royal Foundation, the new Honorary Fellow is campaigning for Early Support Hubs across the UK in his focus on early mental health support and advocacy.

Vice-chancellor of Cardiff University Wendy Larner said: “This year’s Honorary Fellows are doing outstanding work, making incredible strides in their chosen fields for the benefit of wider society. They are amazing role models to our graduates and show what sort of future is possible.”

In response to receiving the honour, Dr Alex wrote in an Instagram post: “I should have been watching Llyr graduate as a doctor this summer. He died a few weeks before starting his studies. There is no hiding away from the pain that brings. But avoiding pain isn’t what grief is about, instead we learn to live and grow with it.

“On Monday I received an Honorary Fellowship by Cardiff University for my contribution to the field of mental health. It has of course meant the world and I am incredibly grateful, thank you.

“As I stood to give my acceptance, I could vividly remember my graduation day of a decade ago. I walked out of the hall after the ceremony and I saw Llry bounding up the stairs to meet me, with the biggest smile on his face. He had a blue tie to match his beautiful bright blue eyes.

Dr Alex continued by congratulating graduates, adding: “Congratulations to everyone graduating this summer. I am so proud of you, as are your family and friends. Cherish these moment and be proud of yourself. Thank you Cardiff, you were amazing.”

Dr Alex George is joined in this fellowship from Cardiff University by Babita Sharma, an award-winning broadcaster, journalist and author.

Other recipients include Professor Alice Kessler-Harris of Columbia University in the Institute for Research on Women and Gender, and Dr Daf James who is a multidisciplinary artist, award-winning playwright, screenwriter, composer, performer and author.
