Woman pleads guilty to stealing charity donations in Nottingham student flats burglary

‘She helped herself to whatever she could get her hands on’

Charity donations were stolen from a Nottingham student accommodation in mid July earlier this year. The offender in question has now pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary and five shop thefts.

Linnette Burton, 41, was labelled a “prolific thief” by West Bridgford Wire after stealing from charity boxes and repeatedly shoplifting from Nottingham stores.

Burton broke into the same student accommodation on Ilkeston Road, Radford, twice within one week, stealing items from communal areas in the early hours of 10th July and 17th July 2024.

In her first break-in, Burton rooted around a charity donation box and took a coat. She returned days later, removed a smart TV from the wall, and left the building with it in hand.

Later on 17th July, Burton continued her spree by stealing perfume from a store in Nottingham’s Victoria Centre around 3:45pm. This marked her fifth shoplifting offence across June and July.

PC Emma Jordan from Nottinghamshire Police said: “We’re really pleased to see that Burton has now owned up to her persistent thieving and has now been punished for her actions. Her decision to repeatedly break into a property and help herself to items, including ones from inside a charity box located there, were completely immoral.”

Burton had previously targeted the same store in Victoria Centre on 2nd June and 7th June, taking sunglasses each time. She also stole a £1,400 handbag from a shop in Lister Gate on 9th July, and shoplifted again in Netherfield on 13th July. Nottinghamshire Police linked Burton to these incidents after examining CCTV footage.

“These two burglaries came in the middle of a series of shop thefts involving Burton, in which she helped herself to whatever she could get her hands on,” PC Jordan added. “It should go without saying, but this was not – and never will be – acceptable behaviour, so she has rightfully now been put behind bars.”

Burton has now been sentenced to 20 months in prison.
