Man who died after ‘tragic’ Cowgate bus collision named by police

The man who was found dead on Cowgate on Saturday 2 November has been named by police.

Michael Leneghen, 74, collided with a single-decker bus while walking on the street in the Scottish capital.

The collision led to a major emergency services response following reports of a “severed head” on Cowgate.

Police Scotland has issued warnings for members of the public to not share distressing images and videos of the incident online, instead to send them to the police and report them to the relevant social media platform.

In a statement, Mr Leneghen’s family thanked the emergency services and members of the public, saying: “We wish to thank all the members of the public and emergency services involved.

“We would now ask for privacy at this time.”

Sergeant Paul Ewing of Edinburgh’s Road Policing Unit added: “Our thoughts remain with Michael’s family and friends, as well as everyone affected by this tragic incident.

“We have already spoken to a number of people who were in the area at the time and work is ongoing to check public and private CCTV footage.”.

Chief Inspector Trisha Clark assured the public that this was an “isolated incident” and there was “no risk to the wider public” following speculation online about the nature of the incident.

Police Scotland said its investigation is ongoing, saying: “We are still keen to hear from anyone who has not yet spoken to police.”.
