Climate activists say they’re planning to destroy more SUVs after damaging 16 in Edinburgh
Climate group Tyre Extinguishers has targeted vehicles in Edinburgh’s New Town in protest over flooding in Southern Spain
Climate activists have said they’re planning on targeting more cars after damaging 16 earlier this week in Edinburgh.
Pyria, an Edinburgh based member of Tyre Extinguishers, a climate change protest group, told The Edinburgh Tab: “We hit 16 cars last night, and more planned.”
Cars in Edinburgh’s New Town were spray painted with various slogans on Sunday night (3rd November), such as “these cars kill Valencians”.
The protest group also wants its members to “take action now to highlight the connection between climate death and SUV luxury emissions.”

The protest came after over 200 people have died due to heavy flooding across Southern and Eastern Spain that have been allegedly exacerbated due to climate change.
In addition to the spray painting, protesters left images of victims of the Spanish floods such as José Castillejo, 28, as well as Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau, both age eight, who were killed last year when an SUV hit a primary school in Wimbledon, on the cars windscreens.
Pyria told The Edinburgh Tab: “Not enough is being done to highlight that disaster like Valencia have human causes. This is not a “natural” disaster, it’s a disaster fuelled by our governments being enslaved by the fossil fuel and car lobbies.”
The statement from the activists to The Edinburgh Tab continues by saying: “We need emergency action now to bring an end to SUV emissions, and if governments don’t do it, then it’s up to citizens to do it for them.

If we can’t stop such obvious and extravagant forms of world-wrecking, so obviously harmful and such pure vanity, then what’s the point in even pretending we’re in a crisis?”
The protesters claimed that they have members in 22 countries worldwide. Similar action has been taken by the group in Helsinki last week as well as various other instances in cities like Brussels, Leeds and Amsterdam.
They then ended their statement, saying: “We owe this to Valencians and to our kids.”
The BBC reported that “a year’s worth of rain fell in and around Valencia last week,” with scientists from World Weather Attribution saying that climate change was “the most likely explanation” for the sudden and extreme downpour.
An initial estimate carried out by World Weather Attribution shows that the severe rainfall may have been 12 per cent heavier and twice as likely due to global heating.
Police Scotland has been approached for comment.
