Slowthai has appeared in court after being charged with rape – here’s what we know so far
He is set to appear in crown court next month
British rapper Slowthai has appeared in court charged with two counts of rape.
Slowthai, whose real name is Tyron Kaymone Frampton, appeared at Oxfordshire magistrates court via video link on Tuesday 16th May, charged with oral and vaginal penetration of a woman without her consent in Oxford in September 2021.
He only spoke to confirm his real name, date of birth and an address in Northampton.
Prosecution lawyer, Adam Yar Khan, told the magistrates the charge of rape was an indictable-only offence and the case must be heard at crown court, as reported by The Guardian.
The rapper was bailed and is set to appear at Oxford crown court next month.
Slowthai has received Grammy and Mercury Prize nominations over the course of his career and rose to fame in 2019 following the release of his first album, Nothing Great About Britain. His first album was followed by Tyron in 2021 and his third album, UGLY, which debuted in March of this year.
In a statement posted to his Twitter page, the rapper said he “categorically” denies the allegations.
“Regarding the allegations being reported about me. I categorically deny the charges,” he said.
“I am innocent and I am confident my name will be cleared. Until then I will apply my energy to ensure this is concluded swiftly and justly. I ask that my supporters don’t comment about this situation and respect the process and privacy of my family during this time.”
