‘It’s cheap as chips’: Labour MP finds summer home in LSE student accommodation
Southport MP Patrick Hurley described it as ‘a bit like Butlins’
The Labour MP for Southport has found his temporary home in an 80 pound a night accommodation for students of the London School of Economics.
MP Patrick Hurley joined those visiting London during the summer in the accommodation which is rented out whilst students were on break.
Hurley is expected to move into a more permanent home at the end of September after the Labour conference according to PoliticsHome and like most MPs, retain both a home near Westminster as well as one in his constituency.
On his stay at LSE, he told PoliticsHome: “What I found is that at LSE, while the students aren’t there throughout the summer, they rent out rooms to overwhelmingly [holiday-goers] but also anybody that wants a room for the night. And the rates, I’ll be honest, the rates are cheap as chips.
“For a few weeks over the summer, and a few weeks up until the conference recess is over, I was quite happy to do that, and make sure that the taxpayer isn’t on the hook for excessive expenses.
“It’s almost like a Butlin’s in central London, which wasn’t what I was expecting when I got elected. It does the trick.”
Hurley is the first Labour MP for Southport in its history, which was host to the fatal stabbing of two children and injury of ten others just three weeks after he was elected.
