Here’s Ulf and Silverwing’s ending in the book, as House of the Dragon S3’s finale floored us

The final episode of House of the Dragon season three was super intense. Ulf the White, who thus far has done nothing but whinge about not going to the pub, switched to Team Green and barbecued most of Tumbleton with his dragon Silverwing. So, how does Ulf from House of the Dragon die in George R. R. Martin’s book? What sort of ending does he and Silverwing get? This is what happened in the book Fire & Blood.

Like in House of the Dragon, in the original book Ulf switches to the greens. Hugh and Ulf both destroy what little is left of Tumbleton. However, they refuse to do much more fighting for the greens until the remaining Hightowers meet all their demands. Ulf wants to be the lord of Highgarden (that’s the Tyrell family’s castle). He even jokes about becoming king.

The other greens find Ulf so annoying that they start plotting to kill him pretty much straight away. A commander called Ser Hobert Hightower gifts Ulf a cask of Arbor gold wine, which is laced with poison. Ulf is sus of this, so coerces Hobert into drinking the wine too. Once Hobert has some, Ulf downs three glasses. The book says: “Lord Ulf went to sleep, never to awaken.” Hobert Hightower dies too.

After Ulf expires, three knights from Team Green try to claim Silverwing, but this doesn’t work out for them. Silverwing is unimpressed, and attacks them. Some of Aegon’s advisors suggest he could try claiming Silverwing, but he shuts this idea down.

Silverwing is one of the few dragons to survive the Dance of Dragons. Yay for her! The book Fire and Blood says: “Silverwing at last report had departed the desolation at Tumbleton for the Reach, and was said to have made her lair on a small, stony isle in the middle of the Red Lake.” Aw, I hope she enjoyed her retirement.

Silverwing isn’t mentioned in the book again. We can assume that she dies at some point over the next 22 years, because George R. R. Martin’s other books say the last Targaryen dragon dies in 153 AC.
