Legit everyone is confused: Here’s why the family were trapped (then released) in The Last House

Netflix’s new science fiction thriller, The Last House, is gripping from start to finish, but I just have one question: Why were the family trapped, and why were they subsequently released? It’s pretty crucial to the film, after all.

In the film, directed by Louis Leterrier, unemployed engineer Jason and his family become trapped in their suburban home by surrounding water after an unusual storm. Things grow increasingly tense, especially after the emergence of alien-like aquatic creatures that are killing people.

Eventually, said creatures allow the family to leave the house, but why? What changed? Netflix has explained.

Why did the creatures trap and release them in The Last House?

The family, comprised of dad Jason, mum Ann, and kids Graham and Ruth, are trapped in their house for over five years. They manage to survive through a number of means before eventually being let out by the creatures.

Still, there’s a lot of confusion online. People are questioning why the family were trapped in the first place, and why the insidious creatures set them free.

“We think that it’s an invasion movie,” director Louis Leterrier told Tudum, “but we realise that we’re the aliens.”

Essentially, the ocean-dwelling creatures have been living here on Earth with us since the dawn of time. They’ve watched us kill the planet, and they’re understandably p*ssed. That’s why they essentially end the world, though they do give us humans a last chance at salvation. That’s why they trap people in their homes, to test the morals and character of humans before killing us.

Towards the end of the film, upon cornering one of the creatures, the family decides to show mercy and let it go. They pass their test, and are allowed to rejoin the world.

In the director’s own words, the creatures want “to learn how to live together” without the threat of extinction from humans.

A cautionary tale if there ever was one.
