The House of the Dragon cast break down Ulf’s questionable decision-making in the S3 finale

Ulf the White did a 180 in the House of the Dragon season three finale… and then another one. And then he literally went round in circles as he toasted most of Tumbleton with his dragon Silverwing. Although Ulf made lots of important choices in this episode, we didn’t actually see much of him. Thankfully, the cast and writer of House of the Dragon have gone into detail what Ulf was thinking off-screen in the finale, and why he made those shocking choices.

Ryan Condal, the showrunner for House of the Dragon, explained why Ulf ditched Rhaenyra, and relocated to Tumbleton. On the HOTD Season 3 Official Podcast, he said that Ormund told Ulf “the words he’s wanted to hear since the very beginning”, and so Ulf “wants to believe it so bad”.

He continued: “He’s so blinded by, ‘Finally, somebody sees me, and sees value in me, and this very handsome man with his very fancy army is treating me as an equal’. And he just eats it up, because it’s what is missing.”

The cast have gone into more depth about why Ulf then ordered Silverwing to burn Ormund. James Norton – who plays Ormund – said House of the Dragon: Inside the Episode: “One of the ways Ormund recruits Ulf is by appealing to the shame Ulf felt when Daemon struck him in the street in front of his fellow townsfolk. Ormund, in a fury, finds him and then does exactly what Daemon does – strikes him in the street in front of everyone. And yet again, Ulf is shamed.

Tom Bennett, who portrays Ulf, summarised: “I’m burning you lot, and you. I’m burning you lot, too.”
