Edinburgh student dies after falling from cliffs on holiday with friends

The incident occurred at around 1.20pm on Saturday at the Cliffs of Moher

An Edinburgh student has died after falling from cliffs at a popular tourist destination in Ireland.

Accompanied by three friends, the medical student, originally from Belgium, lost her footing and fell from the Cliffs of Moher, leading to her death early Saturday afternoon, prompting a swift response from the Irish Coast Guard and local emergency services.

The student’s body was quickly discovered in the water, transported to Doolin Pier, and the body was moved to the Doolin Coast Guard station where the student was formally pronounced dead, Edinburgh Live reports.

“This is just a desperate tragedy, and sympathy goes out to this young student family and her friends who had to witness her fall,” one source stated.

Irish authorities plan to transport the body to University Hospital Limerick for a post-mortem examination to further investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed the details of the incident and the ongoing investigation: “Gardaí and emergency services conducted an operation following reports of an incident at the Cliffs of Moher. The body of a woman, aged in her early 20s, was removed from the water by emergency services.”
