Four people taken to hospital after a fire at Swansea University student hall

Four people have been taken to hospital after a fire broke out at a university accommodation in Swansea.

The incident happened at around 7pm on Monday at Student Roost St David’s halls on New Cut Road. 12 fire engines rushed to the scene and the road was also closed.

South Wales Police was also in attendance and confirmed that the four taken to hospital only suffered minor injuries including smoke inhalation.

Sergeant Samantha Stone said: “Four occupants were conveyed to hospital with minor injuries (smoke inhalation; one had a minor hand injury).”

More than 100 students were evacuated from the residence including three who had to be rescued via a ground floor window. Student were later allowed back into some of the unaffected blocks.

A parent of one of the students living there, told Wales Online: “It’s mostly rumours from all the students stood outside, so I am loathe to speculate, I’d just add to it.

“But I do know the fire was in block B, [my daughter] is in block A and her block (and all the other blocks, except B) have been let in.”

A full statement from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service is as follows: “At 7.13pm on Monday, May 6^th, the Swansea West, Swansea Central, Morriston (one appliance and turntable ladder), Port Talbot (two appliances and water carrier), Gorseinon, Neath, Pontardawe, Pontarddulais and Carmarthen crews were called to an incident on New Cut Road, Swansea city centre.

“Crews responded to a confirmed fire located on a ground floor hallway of a student accommodation block. Initial crews were faced with an extremely complicated scene as over 100 people had evacuated the complex and it was confirmed there was a fire in at least one of the student flats.  The incident was effectively managed and information was quickly received on where people were in need of rescue from the rear of the site.”

“In total, three persons were rescued via ground floor windows by crew members, with four people rescued prior to the arrival of the Fire and Rescue Service. Some individuals were suffering with smoke inhalation and minor injuries and made their way to hospital.

“Crews utilised six breathing apparatus sets, three hose reel jets, two safety jets and thermal imaging cameras to extinguish the fire.

“This incident required a multi-agency response with South Wales Police and the Welsh Ambulance Services Trust also in attendance, as well as the Fire and Rescue Service’s Incident Command Unit.

“Crews left the scene at 9.02pm and a Fire Investigation will continue through the coming days.”
