‘That’s oppression’: Sam calls out Tyson’s ‘homophobic’ comments on MAFS Aus and he’s angry

Tyson has denied being ‘homophobic’ or a ‘misogynist’

MAFS Australia intruder groom Tyson shocked everyone with his comments about gay people in his introduction for the reality TV show, and one of this year’s gay grooms, Sam Stanton has weighed in.

When asked how he feels about same sex relationships, Tyson said: “That doesn’t bother me too much. What bothers me is if it gets pushed in my face. I don’t like when gay guys come up to me. I’m not gay. That’s on you guys. Whatever you do behind closed doors.”

People were absolutely appalled by his comments online and are already calling for Tyson to be removed from the show. Sam, who we just saw marry Chris, has accused him of “homophobia” and “oppression”. However, Tyson has categorically denied being “homophobic” or “misogynistic”.

In an interview with Chattr after watching the episode back, Sam claimed: “If somebody said to me, ‘Gays are okay, but only behind closed doors’, I would tell them that’s oppression. And it’s absolutely not okay for me to feel like I can exist in the world just like anybody else. It’s a massive problem. It’s homophobic, it’s straight out not okay.”

However, he did say he’s glad Tyson’s comments have been aired on TV, because it means he’s finally getting called out for his behaviour.

“I think if these conversations don’t come up, then no one gets to have them, and then no one gets called out for this behaviour either. Then these people exist in the world and get further and further and further down these toxic paths without being called out, without being corrected,” he said.

“Hopefully, we see Tyson get called out, and then hopefully some people sit at home and watch that and go, ‘Oh sh*t. Maybe I’m wrong with this. Maybe I should relook at this and change my opinion on this. That’s why it’s important to have someone like Tyson on the show.”

During an appearance on the Dangerous Ideas with Deano podcast, Tyson denied being homophobic, saying: “For the record. I’m not a misogynist. I’m not homophobic, and I’m not a racist. I really think I’m a realist. People might beg to differ. I do come across arrogant on the show and I feel like for me that was something I put on.”

In another interview with TV Week, Sam said the best thing about MAFS is that the brides and grooms sit down with the experts every week and get called out for their behaviour.

“It’s the one show where you can put someone really toxic on and show all of Australia that having these thoughts and opinions is not okay. If you don’t put someone like Tyson on the show, those conversations don’t happen,” he said.

“Then these people sit at home going through these TikTok algorithms, getting further and further down these dark paths, hating everyone around them because they’re not being called out for their behaviour.”
