Day in the life of a Red Bull student marketeer in Edinburgh

It’s not just handing out Red Bull samples x

The Edinburgh Tab teamed up with Edinburgh’s Red Bull student marketers to see what the job’s really like day-to-day.

Everyone knows the feeling of excitement when you spot the Red Bull mini on campus, but what do they actually do behind the scenes?

I went along with Edinburgh’s lovely Red Bull student reps to see what their job entails during a student activation – essentially a marketing campaign designed to build up relationships with consumers.

The day I joined them they were working on an activation for Red Bull Basement. A global competition aiding students and founders in transforming their ideas partnering with AMD, Microsoft and Red Bull Ventures.

The student marketeers, three from Edinburgh University, one from Heriot-Watt and one from Edinburgh Napier, had a busy few weeks promoting the activation.

They had visited various uni campuses around the city from Sighthill to George Square in the past couple of days. I joined them to go to King’s Campus at Edinburgh University.

I rocked up to the Nucleus Building at King’s to find the Red Bull van, Mini and all of Edinburgh’s Red Bull student marketeers setting up the stall. There was already a buzz around campus with people wanting to know what was happening.

We had a few moments of peace before the stall was swamped with people wanting to get involved – and of course after a cold can of Red Bull.

To get involved with the competition, students had to come up with an idea they think might be able to change the world in a positive way and sumbit it to the Red Bull Basement website. There’s even AI mentors to help brainstorm if you’re feeling stuck.

People were coming up with great ideas like free sanitary products and an app to improve driver safety. If they’re lucky they might make it into the national finals of the competition at Red Bull HQ in May.

If they win their products will then become reality and they’ll be funded and helped to design the product. They’ll even have a chance to go to the world final in Silicon Valley, win $100,000 USD in equity free funding and start the full development process.

It seems like the Red Bull team had a lot of work to do. Making sure everyone could sign up, know all the details about the competition and of course ensuring everyone got their complimentary can.

It was a full on day, but it was definitely a lot of fun.

Speaking to so many students about their ideas and seeing how everyone works behind the scenes certainly made the job look a lot harder than just handing out Red Bull cans.

It seems like a really fun job to have as a student. If I wasn’t graduating I’d definitely apply myself.

The student marketeers get to travel all around the country promoting events and it seems no two shifts are the same.

It’s also great for your CV and you get to drive the fab Red Bull mini around (if I could drive I’d be so excited for this).

After a full day of helping them out I really did need a can of Red Bull, but it was really worth it to see what they get up to behind the scenes and speak to so many other students about their unique ideas.

Applications to apply to be a Red Bull student marketeer in Edinburgh are open for next year so if this day in the life inspired you then sign up.
