Southampton University to give students free snus in trial to improve exam concentration
Students can collect a packet from 6th April
Southampton University will handing out free snus to students as part of an effort to improve concentration in exams.
A leaked email sent to university staff explained the initiative has been launched as an alternative to other exam allowances such as rest breaks, which have been deemed an “unproductive” use of time.
It explained that, while students have a right to make their own choices about nicotine consumption, this initiative provides a solution that “balances the needs and preferences of all members of the community.”
The email confirmed that every student will be able to collect a free pack of snus at the Students’ Union from Monday next week (6th April), and that there will be a restock as exams draw closer.

Snus has been scientifically proven to improve concentration due to nicotine’s stimulating and dopamine-inducing effects on the brain.
Katie, a psychology student, told The Southampton Tab she is completely in favour of receiving free snus.
“I think it’s great the uni is finally addressing the problem of students getting distracted during exams. I currently take rest breaks, but they’re such a waste of time, and nicotine would be a way more productive fix.”
However, not everyone is in favour of the measure, with one neuroscience lecturer questioning “whatever happened to good old-fashioned smoke breaks.”
“I’m fed up with seeing these fancy new nicotine products on our campus. If the university thinks people perform better with nicotine in their system, they should allocate regular assessment breaks so students can go out for a cigarette,” they said.
You should probably check the date, you April fools!
