Jamie Laing to appear at University of Leeds graduation ceremonies handing out Candy Kittens

Students will have a choice between Smittens or Shox

Jamie Laing will be at graduation giving out Candy Kittens, reflecting his longstanding connection to the University of Leeds.

The Made in Chelsea star studied theatre and performance at Leeds in 2011, after missing his initial grade conditions and later turning up on campus to ask in person to be admitted.

More recently, he applied for a Master’s in food science but was rejected. The university has since moved to offer his company, Candy Kittens, a sponsorship deal as part of an ongoing effort to strengthen ties.

Jamie is now expected to play a more active role in the partnership by appearing at University of Leeds graduation ceremonies, where he will join proceedings on stage to hand out Candy Kittens to graduates as they cross.

He will be present as part of the official ceremony, with sweets distributed during the celebrations to mark the occasion and highlight his continued connection with the university.

Jamie is said to be particularly keen to take part in the moment graduates receive their awards. When asked about the role, he said: “I love Leeds and graduation is a great day for everyone involved, so being there on stage and celebrating with students feels like a natural fit.”

Founded in 2012, Candy Kittens is known for its plant-based sweets and presence in major retailers across the UK.

The University of Leeds is said to be hoping the partnership will help improve relations with Jamie, with some students noting the situation has become a talking point on campus.

One student, April, said: “Every time I go into the Co-op in the union and see Candy Kittens, it feels a bit awkward. It’s hard to ignore.”

Others have suggested the situation is particularly noticeable among London-based students, who claim to feel a stronger connection to Jamie due to his background and ties to Chelsea.

A London-born Leeds student, Felicity April-May, said: “It would be sick to have Jamie on campus for graduation, especially if he’s giving free sweets out.”

The sponsorship is also understood to follow a previous failed attempt by Jamie to launch a Leeds-based pub, which insiders claim was impacted by a shortage of blonde wigs for staff uniforms.

The partnership is also expected to include the rollout of new Candy Kittens flavours, including:

  • Berry Buzzball
  • Firework Ashy Earl Grey
  • Bleed Watermelon Green

Jamie said he was pleased to be working with the university again, adding: “It’s great to feel like this is finally a proper collaboration. I’ve always had a soft spot for Leeds.”

If the trial proves successful, there are plans to expand Candy Kittens vending machines across campus, with students potentially required to scan a TFL card for access to exclusive flavours.
