University of Manchester ranked in UK’s top 10 institutions for producing CEOs

Manchester beat both UCL and Durham


Aspiring CEOs, listen up. A new ranking just dropped, revealing the top 10 UK universities producing the most business leaders in the country. 

Manchester is up there in the top 10 and surprisingly, Oxbridge isn’t number one.

Capital on Tap analysed LinkedIn alumni data to determine the top 10 universities in the UK producing the highest number of business leaders and freelancers, so if you’re looking to make it big, these are the institutions to watch. 

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) tops the list, with 19.34 per cent of its 326,403 alumni attaining business leadership roles.

This includes an impressive 19,012 CEOs, 28,943 founders, and 15,162 managing directors.

The University of Cambridge takes second place, where 17.61 per cent of its 414,923 alumni are business leaders.

In third place is Imperial College London, with 17.21 per cent of its alumni becoming business leaders after graduating.

The Universities of Oxford and Westminster finished fourth and fifth in the rankings respectively, with the University of Manchester placing eighth. UoM was found to have an alumni count of 300,422, with 10,569 CEOs and over 15,000 founders.

University of Manchester had over the double amount of managing directors than Edinburgh, which ranked at seventh place. It landed with 12.23 per cent of alumni becoming business leaders. Not bad.

In ninth and 10th place respectively were UCL and Durham University.

Research by Capital on Tap also found that the London School of Economics and Political Science has produced the highest number of CEOs per alumni of any university in the UK.

Additionally, the University of Westminster was found to have produced the most freelancers per alumni, with 5.28 per cent of former students working in freelance roles.

In the same list, Manchester Metropolitan University ranked third, with 4.13 per cent of alumni freelancing.
