‘This sweet old lady’: These tone deaf The Perfect Neighbor takes say Susan was the real victim

‘Couldn’t these folks have told their kids not to play on other people’s property?’

Before we delve into some incredibly tone-deaf takes that make you question whether the poster even watched the documentary, here are the facts of Netflix’s The Perfect Neighbor.

After months of phoney 911 calls about the neighbourhood kids terrorising her, Susan Lorincz fatally shot Ajike ‘AJ’ Owens through her locked door. She claimed she was fearful for her life, with her defence resting on Florida’s highly controversial stand your ground law.

Despite Susan’s final statement, where she reeled off medical issues ranging from heart problems to 25 knee surgeries, the all-white jury found her guilty of manslaughter. She was sentenced to 25 years as a result.

Somehow, after watching AJ’s four young kids be robbed of their mother, some people have argued that Susan was unfairly treated.

People are actually defending Susan from Netflix’s The Perfect Neighbor

In The Perfect Neighbor, directed by Geeta Gandbhir and sold to Netflix for streaming, Susan Lorincz’s history of harassing the neighbourhood kids was painfully clear. She showed a shocking lack of remorse after being arrested, and yet, some people have defended her actions online – going as far as to say she was the real victim of the situation.

One person wrote on Facebook: “This sweet old lady was getting harassed by her whole neighbourhood. Called the police for help many, many times, and they did nothing. Even took pictures to show proof, and still nothing. Then one of her neighbours comes on her property, banging on her door, threatening her… so the sweet old lady was scared to death and forced to defend herself, and SHE went to prison?? What is this world coming to!??”

In a slightly more nuanced post, another person admitted to being “conflicted” about the case, arguing that AJ Owens’ kids were “harassing” Susan.

“I’m so conflicted… I feel for those kids, I do and that mom. But damn, someone can only take so much. ‘Kids will be kids’…. Other people do not have to put up with your kids to the point that they are harassing this woman. My heart breaks for everyone in this,” they said.

Twitter isn’t much better, and while it’s definitely a minority of people on Susan’s side, it does make you question whether they were paying attention during Netflix’s The Perfect Neighbor. There are also the usualy overt racists who claim Susan’s sentence was a result of “anti white” campaigning.

“Just started #ThePerfectNeighbor. Couldn’t these folks have told their kids not to play on other people’s property? [Or] Susan asks the homeowners she’s renting from to build a fence or find another rental somewhere else? I don’t have kids, so they’d drive me bonkers, too, but damn,” someone said, before seemingly victim-blaming.

“Why in the hell would you ever go over to your obviously unstable, aggressive, racist, gun-waving neighbour’s house at night and bang on the door? The police were already on y’all’s side. Send them over there to arrest her crazy ass for theft. This is awful.”

Others claimed that AJ’s neighbours “lied” to the police about the situation, as one person argued: “Watching The Perfect Neighbor on Netflix, and you can tell 10 mins [in] these ppl harassed this lady. The kids fucking tell the truth to the cops about the black lady throwing the sign and hitting the lady with it while all the ‘adults’ LIED to cops.”

For once, Reddit users were on the right side of history. Nontheless, open the schools because media literacy is apparently dead.
