People angry over influencers walking the Victoria’s Secret fashion show need to calm down
It’s not that deep
The Victoria’s Secret fashion show is back for its second year after its big revamp, this time with influencers mixed in with professional models. But should this be the new standard?
Quenlin Blackwell and Gabi Moura are two social media influencers who have huge followings on TikTok and Instagram. They made their Victoria’s Secret runway debut a couple of days ago, walking alongside runway icons like Gigi Hadid and Adriana Lima. It was Quen’s first runway show ever, and she killed her walk. But a lot of people on social media are conflicted about whether they deserve this opportunity.

“The Victoria’s Secret fashion show is for supermodels, not influencers and nepo babies,” said one person on TikTok. “They’re beautiful, they’re cool – but they’re just not Victoria’s Secret angels.”
She talked about the standard of the OG fashion show.
“It wasn’t just a fashion show, it was a religious experience. The people on that stage were goddesses, it was so sickeningly good and we all collectively knew that wouldn’t be us, but we all saw it as a fantasy.”
The comments agree that the VS fashion show should stay exclusive.
“Gabi and Quen should never have been allowed to step foot on the runway They should stay behind tripods,” said one comment.
Lots of videos and tweets sharing the same take have popped up since the show, romanticising the “golden days” during the late 2000s. But let’s be honest, the backlash is way overblown.

I understand the hard work it takes to be a model – it’s a really intense industry that takes years to break into. The Victoria’s Secret fashion show was historically one of the most exclusive runways to get on, for the biggest names in the game. But anyone genuinely upset about this is stuck in the past.
Influencers are now celebrities, whether you like it or not. They’re at every exclusive event, from the Met Gala to the Oscars, and have as much reach as some of the biggest celebrities in Hollywood. A win for influencers is a win for us – at the end of the day, they’re normal people who got lucky on social media, a much more achievable dream than being born into a rich family like lots of professional models.
Two out of 45 of this year’s Victoria’s Secret angels getting their start from social media isn’t a massive deal. Let’s relax guys.
