The deeper meaning of why Ed Gein saw everything green in The Ed Gein Story’s episode four
The green is important for a reason
Episode four of Monster: The Ed Gein Story is simply titled Green. One watch of this episode and it’s obvious that green is a major part of the visual journey the creators take viewers on – and they use the green to show the delusional levels Ed Gein is operating at when he committed his crimes. It’s obviously a way for the show to show audiences how little grip Ed Gein had on reality, despite the fact some media illiterate viewers on TikTok thinking the reason the blood and the tea were green was some kind of editing error. The actual meaning why the show went with green is really interesting – so here’s what The Ed Gein Story was doing with the colour green and why it’s actually so significant.
Ed Green
Pardon the diabolical pun but couldn’t resist. In episode four, titled Green, The Ed Gein Story shows its killer protagonist losing grip on reality as he starts to see things that shouldn’t be green as very very very green. These include the blood of Bernice when he kills her, and when he pours some tea and it’s also green. There are also green headlights and he’s in green underwear at one point.

We see in the show, Ed’s mother warns him that Bernice has an STI. Because of this and how far he’s going into his delusions, the reasons everything is green is because Ed Gein views her blood as being poisoned. He speaks of how blood makes him nauseous, and the reason why everything is seen as green is to represent him rationalising things he’s doing – in his own twisted way, he believes killing Bernice is purifying her of that poison. Ed’s mother says his blood is contaminated because he got with her.
These reasons both in The Ed Gein Story episode Green and in the real life trial led to Ed not facing trial properly because he was declared legally insane. It meant he was “unfit for criminal responsibility”.
The specific of the green became a key aspect in what spared Ed Gein from prison and the death penalty.
