Nottingham Trent University has ranked 25 spots above the University of Nottingham in the Guardian University Guide 2026.
Both of Nottingham’s major universities have improved on their positions from last year, however NTU has made a far more dramatic leap, placing it ahead of the University of Nottingham for the second year in a row.
The University of Nottingham has worked its way up to 50th place, after coming in at 62nd last year. Meanwhile, Nottingham Trent has surged to 25th, following a ranking of 49th in 2025’s guide.
At the top of the table, long-established heavyweights such as St Andrews, Oxford, and Cambridge continue to dominate.
Nottingham Trent subjects have also ranked within the top 10 of their tables.
This includes: Forensic chemistry (1st), forensic science (1st), animal biology (4th), zoo biology (4th), agriculture (4th), equine sports (4th), creative writing (7th), furniture and product design (7th), interior architecture and design (7th), and product design (7th).
The University of Nottingham, on the other hand, scored in the top 10 for the following: Animal science (3rd), agriculture (3rd), veterinary medicine and veterinary surgery (5th), sport and exercise science (7th), aerospace engineering (7th) child nursing (9th), nutrition (10th), food science (10th), food science and nutrition (10th), and zoology (10th).
Nottingham Trent’s vice-chancellor, Steve Denton, celebrated these results as a “fantastic achievement”, and “great start” to the new academic year.
He added that the university’s strong position is a “testament” to all their colleagues and the “hard work” that has gone into to supporting the students.
The Guardian’s rankings evaluate universities on eight key measures: Student satisfaction, feedback quality, staff-to-student ratios, continuation rates, overall value added, the spend per student, entry standards, and graduate prospects.
