Before the beef, here’s everything Ethel Cain has said about Lana Del Rey over the years

She often gets frustrated when her music is compared with Lana’s

The drama right now between Ethel Cain and Lana Del Rey seems a bit left field, like it just erupted from nowhere. But if you look back over the years between the details and the small, deleted posts allegedly shared by Ethel Cain on her social media when she was younger it’s clear there’s been something brewing way before it all erupted today. Lana Del Rey posted a video on her Instagram within the last 24 hours, a preview of her new song rumoured to be titled All About Ethel in which she shades Ethel by name in the lyrics. Lana then provided even more context about why she has drama with her, and made allegations about Ethel making comments about Lana’s weight in an Instagram post. Here’s everything we know and that is rumoured to be about Lana Del Rey that Ethel Cain has said in a timeline of their history.

Ethel Cain was a huge Lana Del Rey fan

There are numerous posts from Ethel’s old Internet presence where she listed Lana Del Rey as one of her favourite artists, alongside the likes of Florence + the Machine and Marina and the Diamonds. Early 2010s Tumblr core was alive and kicking. She also previously covered Born To Die and just this year Mariners Apartment Complex, two massive Lana songs.

She also said Born To Die was the first album she ever bought.

Ethel started to get frustrated with comparisons of her music to Lana’s

Because Ethel Cain and Lana Del Rey both make similar dark alt pop with themes of Americana, this is where the timeline of their beef starts getting a little murkier. Early in her career, Ethel Cain was frequently compared to Lana when critics would write about her music – prompting her to eventually post on social media “I’m going to be compared to that lady til the day I die” – which many interpreted to be about the Lana comparisons.

She also posted “I love Lana and I love her music but there’s a hundred other things at play here. If that’s an entry way for a review, that’s fine. But sometimes people arrive at Lana Del Rey and stop at Lana Del Rey. And yeah I called it lazy writing because it’s lazy for me and her. I think it’s kind of a detriment to the expansive work of two female artists to just reduce them to being similar to each other.”

The Jack Donoghue saga

Lana Del Rey dated Salem’s Jack Donoghue and posted a now iconic picture of the pair of them in front of the Cook County Jail in Chicago. Ethel Cain posted a picture of her with Jack on Twitter but quickly deleted.

This is what Lana was seemingly referring to in the song she posted a snippet of, where she said “Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post / Think it’s cute reenacting my Chicago pose”.

Ethel Cain claims Lana Del Rey has blocked her on Instagram

The only response Ethel Cain has so far posted regarding what Lana Del Rey has been saying is her post on her story last night, where she said “Update: Lana Del Rey has blocked Ethel Cain on Instagram”.

Lana claims Ethel made comments about her weight

Lana then this morning clarified further making allegations that it was “brought to her attention” that Ethel was posting “disturbing and graphic side by side images – next to unflattering creatures and cartoon characters making constant comments about my weight”.

Lana then also, quite vaguely, says “When I heard what she was saying behind closed doors from mutual friends and started inserting herself into my personal life I was definitely disturbed.”

Ethel Cain is yet to comment further on the drama.

So whilst the Lana Del Rey and Ethel Cain timeline of beef rages on, I just want to say I think it’s really important to note that any way you’re feeling towards either party – it’s never an excuse to be transphobic. The vitriol towards Ethel Cain leaning towards trans slurs is honestly disgraceful, and you can support Lana without resorting to such nonsense. Ethel Cain is a woman, and trans rights are human rights. If Lana is fuming with Ethel and still has the (basic human) decency to use the right pronouns, so can you.

It’s horrible to see right now that people are using it as an excuse to be openly transphobic online – I cannot stand it.
