‘Stupid c**ksucker’: Russell Group uni apologises for rude language in prospectus email

‘I was not offended in the slightest. In fact I found it hilarious but really appreciate the explanation and apology’

A Russell Group university has issued an apology after prospectus emails were sent out containing offensive language.

Queen Mary, University of London faced the incident earlier this month which caused random people to be called rude names.

One of the people who received a prospectus email from the university took to X to laugh about the situation.

The user, who calls themselves Auntie Mabel, wrote: “You know your life has really gone down the toilet when a university sends you an email calling you a ‘Stupid Cocksucker’.

“I was not offended in the slightest. In fact I found it hilarious but really appreciate the explanation and apology.”

Auntie Mabel attached screenshots of the incident, as well as an apology from the university, to the post.

In the apology email, the Russell Group university sent its “sincere apologies”, explaining that “a spam bot” had “attacked” its systems. The email also noted that no data was compromised during the incident.

A QMUL spokesperson said: “We have successfully resolved an issue generated by a spam bot using email addresses that had been harvested from the internet.
“The data we hold has not been compromised. We have apologised to anyone affected.”
