‘I can’t tolerate it’: Lily Allen’s fiery response to backlash over *those* abortion comments

‘I’m actually a good person’

Lily Allen has once again dived into the abortion debate after her earlier comments about not remembering how many she’d had drew criticism from people online.

Lily has never shied away from talking about the highly divisive subject, stating in 2022 that women should not have to “justify” having an abortion for the simple reason of not wanting a baby. At the time, she was performing her 2009 hit F*ck You with Olivia Rodrigo at Glastonbury, which they naturally dedicated to the US Supreme Court following the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Though she’s made her feelings on abortion crystal clear in the past, the internet was embroiled in fierce debate following an episode of her Miss Me? podcast with bestie Miquita Oliver.

Right, so what were Lily Allen’s initial comments?

During the episode of Miss Me?, Lily Allen and Miquita were accused of being “callous” after admitting to not counting the number of abortions they’d had in their lifetimes.

“Abortions, I’ve had a few, but then again, I can’t remember exactly how many,” she said on the podcast, laughing as she added, “I can’t remember, I think maybe, like… I want to say four or five.”

Miquita also estimated her own abortion count at around five, explaining: “The pattern would be: Unfortunately, get pregnant, like, not want to be, have an abortion, then while I was sedated in said abortion, they’d give me a coil.”

The comments drew the kind of criticism you’d expect, with one person writing on Twitter: “This is who Hollywood props up as a role model for young girls. Abortion isn’t a joke. It’s the killing of a child created by God. There’s nothing funny about that.”

“Imagine thinking it’s funny to not know how many of your own children you had killed,” another wrote. “Not edgy. Not empowering. Just heartbreaking.”

Of course, amidst the horrid comments from people online, Lily and Miquita did receive a lot of support from other women who felt their comments were “honest” and refreshing.

The backlash was immense, and she responded accordingly

Following the onslaught of hate left across practically every social platform, Lily Allen and Miquita addressed their earlier abortion comments in this week’s instalment of the Miss Me? podcast. During the episode, Lily reflected on never being the “good little girl” in her career, instead choosing to always share her real opinions.

“There are times I sit there and I think: ‘Oh fuck, life would be so much easier if I just sort of played the game and was a good little girl that said the rights and didn’t p*ss people off,’” she said. “And it’s hard, you know? It’s really difficult swimming upstream in a fucking sea of hateful comments, it’s really stifling.”

On her earlier comments, Lily clocked how people were truly angry over the “audacity of expressing it”, after all, abortions are nothing new.

She said: “And being a woman, it’s like: ‘How dare you find humor in these things — you’re meant to be ashamed and scared, and if you don’t feel ashamed and scared we’re going to do everything that we can to push you back there.

“And guess what? It works. I read a lot of that stuff last week, and when I was young, and I thought: ‘F*ck, I’m a bad person.’ But no, I’m actually a good person. People that are my friends and family know that I’m a good person.”

Concluding, she noted how, like most things, it’s “about control”, adding: “It’s wanting to have control over our minds and our way of thinking, and the way that we feel and relate to ourselves. And that is actually… I can’t abide it. I can’t tolerate it.”

It’s almost like we should just let people make the decisions that are best for them?
