US senator and wife issue update after surviving assassination attempt that claimed two lives

The masked assassin also killed another lawmaker and her husband

Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, survived a brutal assassination attempt last week that tragically claimed the lives of Minnesota state representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark.

On June 14, Vance Boelter allegedly posed as a police officer to carry out what Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called politically motivated assassinations. He had over 70 names on his hit list, with more names later being found at his home, and several AK-style firearms stashed in his SUV that had been altered to resemble a law enforcement vehicle. Wearing a silicon mask, Vance reportedly gained entry to the property where he shot John Hoffman nine times and his wife Yvette eight times. Their nephew shielded their daughter Hope from the gunfire, and she then called the police.

Though both John and Yvette Hoffman are recovering well in the hospital, Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were not so lucky.

Yvette sent an update to a senator, as John Hoffman was in surgery

After the attack, Senator Amy Klobuchar posted a text message from Yvette that she had sent from her hospital bed.

“Thank you so much Senator! Our family is so humbled by the love and outpouring we’ve received from everyone. John is enduring many surgeries right now and is closer every hour to being out of the woods. He took nine bullet hits. I took eight and we are both incredibly lucky to be alive,” she wrote.

“We are gutted and devastated by the loss of Melissa and Mark. We have no words. There is never a place for this kind of political hate. Thank you for your friendship always. Minnesotans are at our very best when we stand together. You can share this statement.”

Following the arrest of Vance Boelter, Yvette issued a statement on behalf of her husband, who was still recovering from extensive injuries.

She said, “First and foremost, John and I hold a deep and profound gratitude for the work of our law enforcement agencies and the public for their help in bringing the suspect to justice, while diligently keeping our communities safe during this extremely difficult and senseless event.

“John and I are both incredibly lucky to be alive. We continue our healing journey and are humbled by the outpouring of love and support our family has received from across the state and our nation.

“There is never a place for senseless political violence and loss of life. We are devastated by the loss of Melissa and Mark, and our hearts go out to all those who knew and loved them both. We are always at our best when we unite together.”

The family issued another statement

In a statement obtained by ABC News late on Monday, Senator John Hoffman’s family offered an update on him and Yvette, saying they were “lucky to be alive” after Vance’s alleged attack.

“We continue our healing journey and are humbled by the outpouring of love and support our family has received from across the state and our nation,” they said.
