‘Her toes were gone’: Mum recalls horrifying moment her nine-year-old was attacked by piranhas
She underwent surgery following the attack on June 8
The mother of a nine-year-old girl has come forward after her daughter was savagely attacked by piranhas during a trip to a popular lake destination in Brazil’s Caldas Novas area.
Yasmin Vieira and her mother, Janaina Pereira, were but one family enjoying the sun at Lago Sul on June 8, but they were reportedly the only victims of what sounds to be a horrifying attack. The culprit? A school of hungry piranhas with a taste for human flesh. Yasmin had only been paddling her feet for a few moments when something beneath the water began gnawing at her.
“[She] really wanted to see the place, we went to the edge so she could put her feet in the water. It was a matter of seconds,” Janaina told the local media outlet Correio Braziliense. “I only heard her scream: ‘Mommy, the piranha got my foot!’. She jumped and got out of the water. When she sat down, I saw that her toes were gone. It was terrifying.”
Yasmin lost two toes because of the gory attack, with her mum blaming it on the area’s “poor signage” that did not detail the dangerous creatures lurking in the lake.

Her daughter was rushed to the hospital following the piranha attack
Following the piranha attack, Janaina recalled her daughter “losing a lot of blood” on the lake bank before the national emergency service team, SAMU, responded 15 minutes later. They transported her to the Maternal Hospital, where she underwent surgery to close up her wounds.

“The child was promptly attended to by the medical team at the Children’s Emergency Care Unit (PAI), including an orthopaedic specialist, who performed all necessary procedures to minimise the injuries – including the Figueiredo Technique,” the City of Caldas Novas confirmed in a statement.
Yasmin is in “constant” pain as a result of the piranha attack, but her mother has decided to keep the bandages on for the time being to better “protect her from the visual impact” of losing two toes.
“She is sad because she keeps questioning something that was ripped from her body. As a mother, seeing this is devastating,” Janaina added. “My emotional state is terrible. She tries to be strong, but she goes through a lot of suffering.”
Despite the mother’s complaint, the city said measures had been taken to better highlight the dangers of the area. Though horror films would lead you to suspect otherwise, piranha attacks are incredibly rare despite being endemic to much of South America.
