Ex-Bristol academic faces prosecution over X posts

The CAA are prosecuting Miller for comments of a menacing nature on social media

David Miller, a former professor at the University of Bristol, is facing a private prosecution for his social media posts.

The Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) charity have alleged that David Miller posts in contravention of section 127 of the Communications Act 2003, which outlaws the communication of messages on public platforms that are ‘menacing.’

David Miller frequently purports anti-Zionist views and argues that Islamophobia in the United Kingdom has risen along with zionist rhetoric. The CAA allege his comments are hateful and of a menacing character.

The CAA say his comments began in November 2024 with regards to a football match in Amsterdam involving an Israeli team.

On March 20th, he posted: “Every genuinely anti-Zionist Jew can count on being kept safe by the movement, when the time comes. Every Zionist Jew must be held accountable and de-Zionised. #DismantleZionism.”

Additionally, on March 24th, he posted: “Protests are not enough. Listen to our brothers and sisters in Gaza. Those who are interested in ending this genocide must begin by targeting those responsible near them: the entire Zionist movement globally must live in fear of accountability until it is dismantled and its ideology eradicated. And let’s be clear, there are Zionists everywhere. In every town and city. Find out where they are. #DismantleZionism.”

HM Courts & Tribunals Service have confirmed the first hearing will take place on July 2nd at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

David Miller was dismissed from the University of Bristol in October 2021 after delivering a lecture on the principles of Islamophobia.

However, a tribunal ruled in February 2024 that David Miller had been discriminated against and was wrongfully dismissed by the university.

The February 2024 ruling was described by Miller’s Lawyer as a “landmark case” that marked “a pivotal moment in the history of our country for those who believe in upholding the rights of Palestinians.”

The CAA has described itself as an organisation of volunteers which works to “expose and counter antisemitism through education and zero-tolerance enforcement of the law.”

David Miller has been approached for comment.
