
In full: Liverpool suspect Paul Doyle’s first day in court as he ‘held back tears’ on the stand
He appeared twice today, and further trial dates have been set for the future
Today (Friday 30th), Liverpool parade suspect Paul Doyle has appeared in court for the first time. 53-year-old Doyle has been accused of driving a car that hit pedestrians at the victory parade earlier this week.
Merseyside Police said 79 people were left injured after a car ploughed through crowds on Monday. The youngest person was aged just nine years old, while the oldest was 78.
The father of three faces seven charges. They are:
- Two counts of unlawful and malicious wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH)
- Two counts of causing unlawful and malicious GBH with intent to cause GBH
- Two counts of attempted, unlawful and malicious GBH with intent to cause GBH
- One count of dangerous driving
He has not yet entered a plea. Today was the first day in court for Paul Doyle. Here is a rundown of what happened.

Paul Doyle appeared in court this morning to confirm his name and details
This morning Paul Doyle appeared in court for the first time. He first appeared in front of Magistrates. Doyle arrived in a police van, a little before 10am. In the court, he spoke only to confirm his name, age and date of birth. He was dressed in a black suit, white shirt and black tie.
In the courtroom, Doyle was read the list of charges he currently faces. According to The Independent, he “shook his head” as Philip Astbury, prosecuting, addressed the court.
He stood with his hands in front of him, and nodded when he was told he would be remanded in custody. The case was then sent to Liverpool Crown Court.

Appearing at Liverpool Crown Court, Doyle is said to have “held back tears” and was “visibly shaken” and “tired”. He was not asked to respond to any of the charges during the hearing, which lasted about 45 minutes. He is said to have looked around the room, and took in the space filled with reporters, police and lawyers.
Judge Menary told Doyle: “I am going to adjourn this matter now. The next hearing so far as you are concerned is a plea and trial preparation hearing on the 14th of August. The purpose of that hearing will be to enter your pleas to the indictment.”
Further court date appearances for Paul Doyle have been put in place
Following today, a plea and trial preparation hearing has been scheduled for August 14th. A provisional trial date has been set for November 24th, to last three to four weeks.
There has been no application for bail. Doyle remains in custody.
