Students ‘appalled’ after Cardiff University advertises job at Chris Brown concert

Chris Brown’s alleged abuse dates from February 2009 to January 2025

Students are “appalled” after Cardiff University’s Jobshop advertised a job at an upcoming Chris Brown concert.

The 36-year-old R&B singer has faced legal issues dating back to 2009, when he was famously convicted of felony assault against his then-girlfriend, Rihanna.

On Monday, 12th May, @timetoactcardiff, a student-led campaign organisation, criticised the advertisement in a Story post on Instagram: “We are appalled that @cardiffjobshop has advertised out a job which would give more money to a man who has a history of violence against women.

“With advertising a job which would put money in the pocket of an abuser, it gives the impression that such behaviour is able to be excused if it means monetary gain for students.”

The job advertisement has now been taken down.

The role is one of many summer positions Cardiff Jobshop has listed for events at the Principality Stadium. The job involves staffing official merchandise stands.

Talking to The Cardiff Tab, Time to Act said: “We are extremely disappointed to see that Jobshop would put out a job listing by a man with a history of violence towards women.

“Jobshop with this one post undermines the hard work that students have been doing to tackle violence at Cardiff as it seems like such behaviour can be excused when money is involved.

“With VAWG (violence against women and girls) being declared a national emergency, it is time for the SU to stand up and no longer support such violent criminals. We hope that Jobshop reconsiders this listing and stands on the side of victims across their student community.”

In January 2025, Brown filed a $500 million lawsuit against Warner Bros., alleging he was falsely portrayed in its docuseries, Chris Brown: A History of Violence. The series featured numerous women accusing the singer of abuse. One accuser, identified as Jane Doe, alleges Brown raped her in 2020. Brown’s lawyers denied the claims in the documentary.

The film also highlights a number of past accusations about Brown – such as allegedly smashing a window at Good Morning America in 2011, supposedly throwing a brick through his mother’s windshield in 2013, punching a fan in 2016, and accusations of verbal abuse, physical violence, and death threats from ex-girlfriend Karreuche Tran.

In 2016, Brown’s former manager sued him for allegedly punching him multiple times in the head and neck, however, the case was settled out of court in 2019. More recently, in July 2024, four concertgoers accused Brown and his entourage of supposedly attacking and brutally beating them after a show. The case is currently awaiting trial.

Despite the allegations, Brown remains one of the most popular male artists on Instagram with 144 million followers. He continues to perform at popular arenas and stadiums, such as the Principality.

Cardiff University, Cardiff Students’ Union, and Chris Brown’s legal representative have all be contacted for comment but have not yet replied.
