Leeds student narrowly avoids prison after breaking man’s jaw in nightclub
The incident took place in Backroom on Call Lane
A Leeds student has narrowly avoided going to prison after breaking a man’s jaw in a nightclub.
CCTV footage showed Ibrahim Imani, 20, hitting the victim with a punch that sent him to the ground.
Leeds Live reports that the attack took place in the early morning last July, in The Backroom on Call Lane.
The victim was trying to defend a girl who had been “grabbed” by Imanis’ friend. He confronted him, after the girl pointed him out, saying, “Don’t touch girls, it’s not cool.”
Imanis’ friend responded by punching the man. Imani then followed with a right hook punch, shattering the victim’s jaw.
The victim told the court he had no memory of the attack.
In a statement read to court, he said the punch left him with an open fracture to his jaw that “has affected his life more than he could have ever imagined.”
The injury negatively impacted his daily life, health and studies.
He was put on a liquid diet following his jaw being wired shut. This caused him to lose 10kg in four weeks.
The severe swelling of his jaw caused him embarrassment, making it difficult to leave his house for weeks. He also felt “more tired than usual.”
The injury also forced him to defer his university dissertation. As a result, he will not be able to graduate until July 2025.
Imanis’ barrister said that his future was on the line, and dependent on the Judge’s decision.
Honour Judge Mansell Casey praised Imani for his efforts to reform.
