The Young Sheldon deleted scenes that almost made it — And why they were cut

These moments could’ve totally changed the tone of the show

Young Sheldon gave us seven seasons of genius-level quips, Texan charm, and way more heart than anyone expected. Whether it was Sheldon’s science obsessions or Missy’s no-nonsense comebacks, the show grew into something bigger than just a sitcom spin-off.

But like any long-running series, not everything that was filmed actually made it to screen. From hilarious bloopers to full-on deleted scenes, there’s a whole bunch of stuff viewers never got to see, and some of it might’ve changed how we experienced key moments in the show.

Here’s a roundup of all the deleted moments and behind-the-scenes chaos that nearly made it into Young Sheldon.

Sheldon vs. the rotary phone

via CBS

One of the funniest deleted moments involves a phone call that went… nowhere. Apparently, filming a scene with a rotary phone threw the entire young cast into confusion. Iain Armitage (Sheldon) had no idea how to use it. And to be fair, when were any of these kids supposed to have learned how to dial on an ancient landline?

The producers couldn’t stop laughing. “He was dialling and I said, ‘Buddy, it’s just seven numbers,’” one shared. You can sort of catch a glimpse of Sheldon with the phone in of the scenes, but the full take never aired. Probably because it was too confusing for the storyline.

Missy’s wardrobe nightmares

via CBS

Let’s take a moment for Reagan Revord (aka Missy), who deserves an award for just surviving some of her costume choices. From stiff 1980s overalls that made it hard to move to actual wool pajamas that made her itch all over, her wardrobe was a full-blown test of endurance. At one point, the crew had to cut the bottoms off her pajama pants and give her an undershirt just so she could get through a scene.

Oh, and the teeth? Fake. She lost her front teeth during the pandemic break, so she had to wear a flipper (like a baby denture) to keep Missy’s smile consistent across episodes.

The cast’s secret language: ‘Boogle Boggle’ is real

via Urban Dictionary

Reagan and Iain’s off-screen friendship is the stuff of sitcom legend. They got along so well, they literally made up their own secret language on set called “Boogle Boggle.” It’s just English… with a weird twist. Not only is it totally real, it’s even been added to Urban Dictionary. The two would speak it between takes, much to the confusion (and slight horror) of the adult cast. Sadly, it never made it into the show — but I’m petitioning for a spin-off.

The 30-take squeaky chair disaster

via CBS

There’s one blooper that deserves its own Emmy: The infamous squeaky chair. Montana Jordan (Georgie) had to reshoot a scene 30 times because every time the chair squeaked, the cast completely lost it. Even the crew couldn’t hold it together. It eventually made it to air, but only after a ton of patience — and probably some sore cheeks from all the laughing.

Why the funny stuff didn’t always make the cut

A big part of what made Young Sheldon feel more grounded than The Big Bang Theory was its willingness to sit in emotional moments. And sometimes, that meant leaving the funny stuff behind. Co-showrunner Steve Holland explained, “It felt a little tone-deaf. We realised we had earned the right for this family to have their moment of grief. We didn’t have to go for the release valve of a joke all the time.”

Two deleted scenes from the Young Sheldon finale are perfect examples of this.

Sheldon’s teachers tried to comfort him… with science

One deleted scene had Sheldon’s mentors show up at George Sr.’s funeral to comfort him the only way they knew how: By talking science. Imagine grieving your dad and someone starts explaining string theory. It was so Sheldon, but it also took away from the emotional weight of the moment. Holland said it was hard to cut, but ultimately, it felt more powerful to let Sheldon just be quiet — and retreat into his own thoughts.

The baby crying at the funeral that almost stole the scene

In the original cut of the funeral, baby CeeCee, Georgie and Mandy’s daughter, cried loudly through the whole thing. The idea was to show how real life doesn’t pause for tragedy. Anyone who’s ever been to a chaotic family funeral knows exactly the kind of scene they were going for. But when the producers watched the full episode, it just didn’t feel right. They decided the family, and the audience, needed a moment of uninterrupted grief. So, the baby’s meltdown ended up on the cutting room floor.

It’s wild to think how these little changes, cutting a joke, dialling down the chaos, shaped the tone of Young Sheldon.
