Revealed: The Russell Group unis where house shares are the most expensive
Number one isn’t even a London uni and I’m shook
After enduring a year of halls, most UK university students have to scramble to find a house to share with a handful of people who seemed nice enough in Freshers’ Week (and they’ll probably fall out with by term three). But house shares cost wildly different amount in different cities. Students at the University of Nottingham pay an average of three times what University of Sheffields pay to live in a house. Yikes. Here are Russell Group unis ranked by how much house shares cost in their cities.
The landlord insurance company Alan Boswell Group analysed data from 22,000 house shares across different UK cities. Lots of the cities with really expensive house shares are also the cities with Russell Group unis. Urgh.
Surprisingly, London isn’t actually the most expensive city in the UK for house shares. Renting a room in Bristol, Notts or Coventry could actually cost you far more. The cheapest Russell Group uni city for house shares is the University of Sheffield, at just £495 per month. Liverpool isn’t far behind it, at £542 per month.
So, here are the Russell Group unis where it’s most expensive to live in a house share. The data for the University of Warwick refers to Coventry, because that’s where the uni actually is (yes, it’s confusing).
15. University of Sheffield – £495 per month
14. University of Liverpool – £542 per month
13. University of Leeds – £645 per month

It’s often cheaper for students to live in bigger houses, but then you have to share a fridge with a gazillion people
12. University of Birmingham – £650 per month
11. University of Manchester – £665.5 per month
