University of Warwick to ban fancy dress in Copper Rooms due to health and safety concerns

SU door staff will now check all students’ outfits on entry

The University of Warwick SU has made a unanimous decision to ban fancy dress in The Copper Rooms club due to health and safety concerns.

In a leaked email, the university explained that non standard clubbing attire such as hats, headbands, glasses and props are to be confiscated on the door, according to newly imposed SU regulations.

This comes after numerous student complaints over dangerous behaviour and mistreatment of props during SU events.

In a leaked email sent to staff and seen by The Warwick Tab, the University of Warwick SU claimed the decision “had not been taken lightly” but that it was an “essential step to ensure the safety of our students”.

The email also reminded staff to encourage students to be “vigilant” on nights out and report students wearing non standard clubbing attire if they notice banned items in Copper Rooms.

The ban is to be instilled with immediate effect, meaning that all POP! and Skool Dayz events going forward will be impacted.

An anonymous SU bar tender exclusively told The Warwick Tab that they believed ban had been implemented due to an increase in “unsafe” behaviour. They said: “It’s happened because of some foolish and unsafe behaviour at Skool Dayz. I’ve literally seen it all, I’ve seen cowboy hats being thrown across the dance floor, feather boas being used to choke people and ties being used for tug of war.”

Following the news, The Warwick Tab reached out to students affected by the ban. April, a third year linguistics student, told us of her dismay at the new rule: “I really can’t understand the rash decision to ban all fancy dress.

“Sports and society social culture revolves so heavily around dressing up that I don’t know how we will go on. I myself am considering transferring to Coventry just so I can keep wearing fancy dress.”

First year drama student, Jules, reported her concern for the future of clubbing nights such as POP! and Skool Dayz, as well as all other society events held within the SU. She told The Warwick Tab: “It’s an absolute joke. I brought so many of my dad’s shirts and ties with me after Christmas break, now I’m going to have to start wearing them to lectures so they’re not taking up half my wardrobe for nothing.”

It remains to be seen how SU club nights will continue to operate but only time will tell how students will adjust to the ban.

You should probably check the date, you April fools!
