People point out highly edited MAFS moment that could change opinions on controversial groom

And the mess just keeps on coming!

People on TikTok have spotted the shady moment when MAFS Australia producers stitched words into a completely new sentence in an editing technique known as frankenbiting.

Reality TV icon Abbie Chatfield earlier explained how almost every reality TV show uses frankenbiting to fabricate statements from its participants.

“It is too easy to make people say things they didn’t say,” she said. “And when I say that I don’t mean they’re holding a gun to your head, I mean they are using something called frankenbiting. It’s a really tricky editing trick. They use it on almost every reality show.”

To spot it, she suggested keeping your ears perked for sentences that sound almost robotic, and now someone on TikTok has done just that.

Ryan

Someone spotted some frankenbiting during MAFS’ intimacy week

TikTok user Hannah Bowman posted a video back in February after spotting an instance of frankenbiting during MAFS Australia season 12. It came during Alessandra Rampolla’s intimacy weeks when the grooms gathered to discuss their sex lives.

“Was she referring to something in particular?” Alessandra asked the groom, Ryan Donnelly, who is married to Jacqui Burfoot.

Though Ryan replied, “It came back in the photo challenge again”, the more you listen to it, it’s clear that it was edited together.

“Like every word in that sentence came from a different place,” Hannah said. “Once you’re aware of it, it’s so obvious, and it’s like every second sentence. It’s actually crazy.”

It’s not immediately clear what Ryan actually said or why the producers felt the need to Frankenbite it, but it does go to show that reality TV is less about reality and more about those viewing figures. It doesn’t necessarily negate Ryan’s awful behaviour, but still, people on TikTok are shocked nonetheless.

“The frankenbiting is sooooo bad this season,” one person said.

“Another thing they do is cut and paste stuff that was said in the confessionals into the actual scenes, so you think they’re saying it to the other cast members but they actually said it in private,” another said.

Other people weren’t as shocked, as one person argued: “Shows like this are aired for OUR ENTERTAINMENT! So of course it’s scripted, of course there’s ‘frankenbiting’, of course there’re moments where people think ‘why didn’t they say this?’ Bc the producers show us what they want us to see! It makes for good television.”

People have also noticed frankenbiting moments involving Jacqui and Eliot, which calls into question the accuracy of the cast’s depictions, hence why Eliot has already called out the sloppy editing.
