Economist and AMRC chair to replace outgoing University of Sheffield Chancellor
Andy Haldane was the Bank of England’s Chief Economist and is Chief Executive of the Royal Society of the Arts
A leading UK economist has been announced as the University of Sheffield’s next Chancellor.
Andy Haldane – former Chief Economist at the Bank of England and current Chair of the university’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) Industrial Board – will begin the role in November.
The 57-year-old is also a former alumni – having graduated with BA in economics in 1988.
Mr Haldane said he was “thrilled” and “honoured” to be announced announced as the ninth Chancellor in the university’s history.
“The University is one of the jewels in the crown, not just of the city but of the whole country.
“I look forward to supporting and celebrating its continuing success and growing international profile.”
He will take over from Dame Anne Rafferty – the UK’s former Lady Justice of Appeal, who has held the role since 2015.
Unlike the position of vice-chancellor, the role of the university’s chancellor is ceremonial and has the primary functions of representing the university and conferring degrees.
Mr Haldane is also Chief Executive of the Royal Society of the Arts, founder of the Pro Bono Economics personal wellbeing charity, and Vice-Chair of National Numeracy.
He was also named among Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2014, and served as head of the government’s Levelling Up Taskforce from September 2021 to March 2022.
Professor Koen Lamberts, the University of Sheffield’s vice-chancellor, said he was “delighted” to announce Mr Haldane’s appointment.
He added: “Andy’s exceptional career spanning academia, public service, and economics, and his longstanding connection to the University, makes him an ideal fit for this prestigious role.
“His deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing higher education, combined with his commitment to social impact, will be invaluable.
“We know he will be an inspiring figure for the entire University community.”
