‘Technical fault’ causes major University of Edinburgh IT outage

IT services such as Learn, MyEd and the Eduroam WiFi network were disrupted

IT services as The University of Edinburgh were inaccessible this morning due to a technical fault.

Services such as MyEd, Learn and all Edinburgh University ran WiFi networks including VisitEd, Central and Eduroam were down from 8.15 a.m. to around 11am.

The university’s IT helpline sent an alert out on its X page at 8:51 am, saying: “As of 8:15 a.m. this morning, Information Services are seeing unavailability for all ed.ac.uk websites, which is causing a lack of access to services such as MyEd, UniDesk, the VPN, Learn and more, including the main Uni website. This is being investigated urgently”.

Students responded in the comments sharing their outrage, particularly as final deadlines and dissertations are due soon, with one saying: “Hurry up man I’ve got a presentation to do”

A university spokesperson told The Tab: “This morning the University experienced an IT outage which affected services for students and staff including the main website and on-campus wifi. The issue was investigated urgently and caused by a technical fault. All services are now restored”.

Rumours had previously circulated that the university was subject to a cyber attack, these claims were denied by the university.
