University of Leeds graduate died after fight with karaoke bar bouncers in Thailand

Nick Weir was refused entry to the bar after allegedly acting erratically

A University of Leeds graduate has died following a fight with karaoke bar bouncers in Thailand.

Nick Weir, from Wiltshire, was turned away from 91karaoke in the early hours of Sunday (23rd March) morning after allegedly acting erratically.

The 28-year-old was killed during the altercation with two bouncers in Bangkok, after an apparent misunderstanding.

CCTV footage from the area showed two members of security from 91karaoke following him on a motorcycle down a quiet side road nearby after he sprinted away from the bar.

The bike stopped abruptly in front of the Brit when one of the bouncers asked him if he needed help.

Nick then acted displeased, according to local media, and jumped on the motorcycle.

This is when the second bouncer supposedly pushed Mr Weir away, leading to a confrontation.

According to the Daily Mail, in an effort to clarify the situation, one of the bouncers held out his phone “to translate”.

In response to this, Nick reportedly attempted to grab the phone but missed, before running to try and get on the motorcycle.

The three men were then seen on CCTV fighting.

The Leeds grad was then held in a restraining position, during which he was to have become “still”.

A nearby security guard called for help after Nick became unconscious, according to police, but paramedics were unable to save him.

The media has reported that it is not clear what led to Nick’s erratic behaviour at the bar or when he tried to get on the motorcycle.

However, according to police, he had already run nearly a kilometre before reaching the bar.

Lieutenant Colonel Apichai Hwanjit, the deputy superintendent of the Bang Pho police station in eastern Bangkok, said: “Currently, we are waiting for the forensic results to determine whether the deceased was intoxicated or under the influence of any substances.

“It is crucial for the case to ensure clarity. We are waiting for the blood test results to check for drugs or alcohol.

“From the CCTV footage, he did not appear to be in a typical state of drunkenness.

“He was running, shouting and causing a commotion, but he wasn’t completely out of control. He ran in a straight line, not stumbling like someone who is drunk.”

“We are unsure if there was any pressure applied during the fall that caused the death, so we are waiting for the forensic results,” he added.

A friend of Nick’s, who has requested to be anonymous, reacted to the news, telling ViralPress: “I didn’t know. That was not in [his] character at all.

“He was so polite, the nicest guy. I can’t believe it. I can’t process this.

“I knew he was in Thailand. I messaged him yesterday but haven’t heard back from him.”

Investigations are ongoing.
