Popular Glasgow restaurant remains closed following fire last month
Mother India in the West End has been closed since the blaze in February
A popular Glasgow Indian restaurant that has long been one of the city’s most recognisable eateries remains closed as the result of a fire in last month
A blaze broke out on Sunday 23rd February in Mother India on Westminster Terrace which has left the beloved restaurant temporarily shut.
Moreover, according to the website, there is not yet a date for the business’ reopening.
Mother India, a famed establishment loved by locals and tourists alike, boasts glowing praise from many, perhaps most notably Grammy Award winner Lewis Capaldi. Lewis previously gushed over the restaurant; labelling its offerings as the “best curry you’ll ever have”.
Serving a wide range of Indian food from tantalising curries to crispy pakoras, the eatery is central to the significant Indian food scene in the city.
Glasgow Times reported last month that Police Scotland was informed of the fire at 11:15am. Neighbouring Kelvingrove and Sauchiehall Streets were also closed, with emergency services diverting pedestrians and traffic.
Flats above the restaurant were also evacuated by emergency crews according to the Daily Record. The restaurant was forced to cancel all bookings for the month of March as a result.
Mother India took to social media to inform customers of the incident, and requested them to contact staff for any clarification regarding bookings.
A statement on its website confirms: “Bookings for March are unavailable as we currently do not have an opening date, this will be updated on our Social Media.
“Any gifts vouchers that expire during this time will be extended, please contact [email protected] who can arrange this. Gift Vouchers cannot be used in any of our other venues.”
