University of York student dies after entering River Ouse
The student has been named as Evan Geoffrey d’Andilly
A student has been found in the River Ouse on Wednesday morning, found by police divers.
The nineteen-year-old has been confirmed as Evan Geoffrey d’Andilly, a student at the University of York.
Evan, originally from Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire, entered the River Ouse from the Ouse Bridge at around 3.06 am on Wednesday 5th March. His body was retrieved from the River Ouse by police divers in the city centre at about 11:45 am that same day.
Evan’s colleagues and friends have since been receiving support following his unexpected death, with his family not yet wishing to provide a statement to police, asking that their privacy be respected whilst they grieve their loss.
A spokesman for the University of York told The York Press: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the death of Evan, and our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
The university has offered support for those affected by the loss: “This is also very upsetting news for our community and we are providing support to staff and students affected by Evan’s tragic death.”
North Yorkshire Police said there are believed to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding Evan’s death. However, they have appealed for any witnesses or those with relevant CCTV or dashcam footage to get in touch on 101, quoting reference NYP-05032025-0030.
The news comes only a few months after the body of a York St John student was found in the Foss River, having gone missing when walking home in the early hours of the morning.
