Students in Cardiff take to TikTok to show the rat problem in their house

It is said that around 60 per cent of properties in Cathays will have a rat issue at some point

Students in Cardiff have taken to TikTok to show off their rat problem.

The video shared to TikTok by daisyxrussell is captioned “POV: you live in Cathays and TWO RATS run into your living room” with a crying emoji and honestly we’d cry too.

Cathays has never had the best reputation for cleanliness, with students experiencing what feels like non-stop rain, dirty streets covered in rubbish and most concerning of all, the true habitants of the area, rats.

In the video you can see two house mates attempting to check the bins armed with part of a hoover. It then cuts to show three of the house members sat on the kitchen counters as a rat runs around on the floor, apparently having escape its battle with the hoover.

On the next attempt the house changes tactic, instead trying to catch either of the two rats with a Boots box, only to lose them behind the couch which is quickly de-pillowed. The pillows are then used to make what appears to be a barricade between the kitchen and living room, as the couch is moved away from the wall.

Eventually the house mates manage to guide the two home invaders out of the back door and back onto the street, before celebrating their success.

One commenter said: “No, why is the rat problem in Cathays so bad it’s concerning?”, with another saying: “Cathays sounds like a horror movie.”

One user added: “But I can see at least five [rats]? Students in Cathays are literally the same and the main cause of this.”

Speaking with The Cardiff Tab, Jamie, a law student, said: “I’ve seen rats eating rats, rats eating birds, and birds eating rats. The rodents are practically worse than the landlords at this point.”

Another student also added: “I actively avoid Cathays just because of the rat problem.”

According to WalesOnline, Cardiff Council said that it has already “issued 2,661 enforcement notices in the area and 96 fixed penalty notices so far this year. Those notices are just for people who are failing to present their waste correctly on bin collection day.”

A Cardiff pest controller, Gareth Davies said that most rodents in Cardiff are in Cathays, which is infamous for pests and where he claimed 60 per cent of properties will have a rat issue.

He added: “It’s the epicentre of Cardiff’s rat population by miles. I don’t blame the students so much”.

The rat issue is most apparent in around City Road, where some streets are flooded with open food waste and bin bags caused which has unfortunately led to fines for both residents and businesses.

As students continue to battle against the rodents, it’s clear, this won’t be the end of Cathays rats on TikTok.
