Gabby Petito’s parents have revealed what they did with the van she and Brian were driving

They’ve kept some items from inside the van as memories

Gabby Petito’s tragic death captured the world in August 2021, and it’s done so once again after the new American Murder documentary on Netflix.

The 22-year-old was murdered by her fiancé Brian Laundrie while they were travelling across America in a Ford Transit van that had been converted into a camper.

As the documentary details, the van was found at his parents’ home in North Port, Florida and seized for evidence, but what happened to it after that?

Gabby’s dad Jim Petito spoke to NewsNation when the documentary was released and revealed they actually had the vehicle destroyed after the police were finished with it.

“We crushed the van,” he said. “We didn’t want the van to be out there and someone owning the van and then saying, ‘Here’s the van that Gabby was…’ So, we had it crushed.”

He kept some items from inside and outside the vehicle as memories of her, including a gasoline cap and a sticker from their stop at the Great Smoky Mountains.

Both of them are now displayed on a shelf at his home as reminders of the once-in-a-lifetime tour that Gabby so desperately wanted to go on.

She went on her first road trip with Brian from 2019 to 2020, which was a drive from New York to California.

After that, they bought the converted van in December 2020 and spent the next six months saving before leaving for their second trip on July 2, 2021.

Gabby wanted to vlog their travels on her YouTube channel Nomadic Statik, but sadly only uploaded one video before she was tragically murdered.

The NewsNation reporter also spoke to Gabby’s mum Nichole Schmidt and she surprisingly revealed she has forgiven Brian.

“I have forgiven Brian, and I know that’s what Gabby would have wanted, and I’m moving forward so that I can help people,” she said.

“I don’t think everyone has to forgive. They can when they’re ready, or they might never be ready. But for me personally, I needed to forgive to let that anger go.”
