University of York beats Exeter and Sheffield in Times Higher Education’s ranking for 2025

York ranked high for arts and humanities

The Times Higher Education’s global reputation rankings for 2025 are out and, with little surprise, ranked Harvard as the number one university in the world for its 14th consecutive year.

The University of York, however, came in at 146th, ranking higher than the likes of the University of Sheffield and Exeter.

Nationally, the survey shows that all 24 Russell Group unis in the UK are among the 300 selected universities worldwide with the best reputation.

But what are the rankings and what exactly are they revealing I hear you ask? The Times Higher Education ranking provides readers and prospective students with information on how well a university performs in certain areas and, ultimately, where it ranks in comparison to others around the globe.

Over 55,000 senior academics across the world vote for the universities they think have the best reputation, helping young people in the decision of which university they’re more willing to spend thousands of pounds on.

Each university is judged based on five categories, including: Teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry.

The University of York ranked at 54th for arts and humanities and 65th for psychology, but lower for business and economics, clinical and health and engineering.
