‘I am a PERSON not a product’: Camp Rock star slams TikTok trend inspired by her iconic scene

You’ve no doubt seen people recreating the scene with the biggest household objects they can find

Camp Rock actress Jasmine Richards has slammed the Here I Am TikTok trend that is inspired by one of her iconic scenes from the classic Disney Channel film.

Camp Rock came out in 2008 and starred Demi Lovato on her quest to become a pop star. It also featured the Jonas Brothers, Meaghan Martin, Alyson Stoner, and Roshon Fegan, with Jasmine Richards stepping into the role of Margaret Dupree. Margaret was initially one of the mean girls before finally learning to stand up for herself against Tess.

Despite being in the entire film, her big moment came at the end when she performed Here I Am with the biggest guitar you’ve ever seen. Now, almost 20 years after the film came out, people are recreating the scene on TikTok to hilarious results. Jasmine is not happy about it.

Unlike other TikTok trends, Camp Rock’s Here I Am is incredibly easy to do. Basically, all you need is the song and the biggest household object you can find, whether that be a vacuum cleaner or your dog.

One TikTok user, who combined the trend with “Demi Lovato knees”, racked up millions of views and 175k likes as he rocked to Here I Am with a shopping trolly. Another person amassed 106k likes by doing the trend with an enormous Lightning McQueen driveable car.

Jasmine, who has left the world of acting for a relatively normal life, noticed the trend and issued a statement on her Instagram that slammed those taking part in it.

She wrote on her Instagram story: “I feel like this needs to be said. Though I am very aware of the recent trend happening on TikTok and the influx of new followers and comments.. At this time I am dealing with a very personal matter.

“Having lived a very public life and my efforts to separate myself from the toxic environment that is the entertainment industry and the expectations people feel they are owed when I say I am a PERSON, not a product- HEAR ME.”

“I need you know to I am NOT some party trick. I need you to know I am going through something VERY real and flooding my comments section with ‘Get up’ ‘Do this’ isn’t it.”

Though Jasmine insisted she’s “not interested” in riding the coattails of her earlier successes, in another post she added: “To clear. The trend itself is not the issue. In fact, I quite enjoyed seeing everyone’s rendition.”

“The issue is: How you choose to speak to people. How you choose to make an intentional choice to find someone’s accounts and try to tear them down because you can. How you choose to harass someone who just told you they were going through a life-shattering experience… But you do it anyway.”
